Nome

END OF THE IDITAROD DOG SLED RACE

Nome
Lodging
Built along the Bering Sea, on the south coast of the Seward Peninsula, Nome lies 510 air miles north of Anchorage.  Gold discoveries in the Nome area had been reported as far back as 1865, but it was the gold strike on tiny Anvil Creek in 1898 that brought thousands of miners to the "Eldorado", and since the first strike,  Nome's gold fields have yielded $136 million. The gradual depletion of gold, a major influenza epidemic in 1918, the depression, and finally World War II, each influenced Nome's population, and in 1934, a disastrous fire destroyed most of the City. The population of Nome is a mixture of Eskimos and non-Natives, and although government services provide the majority of employment, subsistence activities continue to be  prevalent in the community.   Nome is the finish line for the famous 1,100-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race, which starts in Anchorage, held each March. January temperatures range from -3 to 11; July temperatures are typically 44 to 65. Average annual precipitation is 18 inches.

We can arrange for you to try some gold panning yourself!  And this is dog sled country, so fit in some time for a dog sled ride/demonstration.  There is quite a road system around Nome (made from all the "tailings" from the mining) and renting a car/bicycle, grabbing a local map and taking off to explore the area around Nome is a once-in-a-lifetime summer experience.  And for the winter pic, DON'T miss the IDITAROD!
