Gold Mining |
Fairbanks
was among the communities struck by gold fever in 1902, and the pioneer
mining spirit is still alive in Fairbanks today. Fairbanks pays tribute to
it's Gold Rush history each year with it's 10 day Golden Days Celebration
festival. Visit Pioneer Park, the city's historic theme park, and see
a replica Gold Rush street. Board the restored sternwheeler SS Nenana, for
a history lesson in river travel or look back in time at the Pioneer
Museum. Visit a modern day working gold dredge, or even try your
hand at panning for gold yourself! Experience pioneer style travel
aboard either a narrow gauge train, or a replica sternwheeler.
Whatever you choose to do in Fairbanks, you won't have time to do it all,
and you'll have the time of your life!
North Pole is located 14 miles
southeast of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway. The area was
originally a homestead, later bought by a development company, who named
it North Pole, in hopes of attracting a toy manufacturer to the area, who
would advertise their products as being made at the North Pole. The
Santa Claus House, which is a year-round tourist attraction, was
subsequently developed by the Miller family and growth from Fairbanks and
the nearby Eielson Air Force Base have increased development over the
years. North Pole is a non-Native community that is renowned as the
"home of Santa Claus. Letters from children all over the world are
mailed to North Pole at Christmas each year. North Pole is accessible by
air, road and rail. Temperatures have been recorded as low as -78 in
mid-winter, and as high as 93 in summer. Annual precipitation is 11.2
inches.
