Sitka

Sitka
Lodging
This beautiful seaside town, located on Baronof Island, just 95 air miles southwest of Juneau, sits nestled between forested mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The nearby waters of Alaska's Inside Passage are a popular feeding ground for humpback whales in the late fall and early spring, while Mount Edgecumbe, an extinct volcano, rises 3,200 feet above the town. Sitka's past is a unique blend of Tlingit culture and Russian history, and today enjoys and economy supported by fishing, fish processing, government, transportation, retail, health care services and tourism.  The climate is mild, with average temperatures in January ranges from 23 to 35 degrees, while summer temperatures average 48 to 61 degrees.  The average annual precipitation averages 94 inches.  Visitors may access Sitka by air and water, as there is no road that connects the community to the mainland.
