Katmai National Park & Preserve

Katmai
Lodges
Katmai became a National Park & Preserve, and received Wilderness designation, by an act of Congress on December 2,1980. This rugged wilderness area,  famous for volcanoes, brown bears, and fish, is also  the site of the Brooks River National Historic Landmark, which is recognized as having North America's highest concentration of prehistoric human dwellings (about 900).  President Woodrow Wilson first created this National Monument in 1918 to preserve the famed Valley of 10,000 Smokes, a  spectacular forty square mile, 100 to 700 foot deep, pyroclastic ash flow that was deposited during the 1912 eruption of Novarupta, the largest volcanic event of the 20th Century.  Today, hunters, fisherman, photographers, hikers and kayakers come to Katmai to experience Alaska's raw wilderness.  Laced with active volcanos, prowled by some 2000 giant brown bears, some weighing as much as 1,000 pounds, and watched over by guardians of the air like majestic bald eagles and hawks, this pristine wilderness consists of over four million acres of  coastline, deep forests and alpine tundra.  Moose wander the tundra, and off shore, sea kayakers are often treated to the playful antics of sea otters, and sea lions along the rocky coast, and, if lucky, may even share space with beluga, orca and gray whales.  The world class sportfishing in Katmai is legendary, with rivers and streams offering up rainbow trout, char, grayling, pike and five species of Pacific Salmon.
