Kodiak
Lodging
Kodiak is famous for it's huge Kodiak brown bears, of course, but also it's world-class sport fishing and for being one of the largest commercial fishing ports in the nation.  For those who don't know Kodiak, visions of a desolate, snow covered, barren wilderness may come to mind, but in truth, the green, snow tipped mountains that plunge into deep tree lined fjords, reminds some people of Norway or Ireland.  In fact, the island turns such a magnificent green during the summer, that it is affectionately called Alaska's Emerald Isle.  Kodiak, which is home to Alaska's largest fishing fleet, was the capital of Russian America from 1783 to 1799. Kodiak is located near the eastern tip of Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska, and is the largest island in Alaska.  The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge encompasses nearly 1.9 million acres on Kodiak and Afognak Islands, and is only 252 air miles south of Anchorage.   The Coast Guard comprises a large portion of the community, which is primarily non-Native, with the majority of the native population being Sugpiaq Eskimos or Aleuts. A Russian Orthodox Church seminary is based in Kodiak, one of two existing seminaries in the U.S.  Kodiak's  economy is based on fishing, seafood processing and government.  Thirteen fish processing companies operate here year-round, and 675 residents hold commercial fishing permits.  Visitors to this temperate island can access it only by air and sea.  There is little or no freezing weather, with January temperatures ranging from 14 to 46,and July temperatures between 39 and 76. Annual precipitation is 60 inches and severe storms are common from December through February. Kodiak experiences frequent cloud cover and fog.  As one might expect, wildlife is abundant here, with over 200 recorded  species of birds,  the famous Kodiak brown bears, red fox, river otter, short-tailed weasel, little brown bat, tundra vole, black tailed deer, beaver, and during the summer, gray, humpback and minke whales.
